During Ocean Week 2026, volunteers and divers collaborated on a marine habitat restoration project at Double Bay Sanctuary in the Broughton Archipelago to protect the ecosystem supporting wild orcas and humpback whales. The team successfully removed significant amounts of marine debris, including over 150 meters of pipe, derelict fishing gear, and tires, from a debris field covering approximately 3,700 square meters. This effort, coordinated by sanctuary manager Nicolette Audy and involving thirteen volunteers, highlighted both the scale of pollution and the vibrant health of the underwater environment. The initiative underscores Double Bay Sanctuary’s broader mission of marine stewardship, which includes plans for a marine mammal rescue center and an ethical retirement home for captive orcas.
